Delft 2022

The most evident impact was certainly in the context of the “Artefacts,” as the materials presented highlighted, in a more evident way, both the potential and any shortcomings of the proposed projects.

Although I was not able to participate in many panels, the ones I saw (and the proposals I peer-reviewed) gave me insights on different approaches to topics which I would conventionally have considered solely ‘discursive’, and part of hermeneutic practices. Seeing how some of the participants tied their research to diverse (and some even novel) pragmatic interventions and design proposals was very interesting and inspiring. One of my interests in these types of events is to see how younger academics are engaging the discipline of architecture and other, kindred ones. I found the conference theme (recommendations) to be helpful as well.

The Evidence of the impact described lies primary in the shifting from a descriptive research to a critical interpretation of the topic. In particular, I received very useful advices regarding the tools that I am using in the research

i was giving some examples for how the textiles I created match with the writings from my personal research diaries, using autoethnographical documentation. It really made me realise how much they are interwoven with each other. Creating these textiles also helped me realise how nomadic societies were living and creating artefacts. Showing them together in the conference made me more aware of how they are connected to each other.

When i was presenting my textile artefacts, we discussed how they relate to my theoretical approaches, and I explained how making these artefacts in different environments allowed me to theorise more about more-than-human approaches and traditional knowledge.

at the moment, we are rewriting the doctoral regulations of our university and are leading a broad discussion on the terminology of practic-based, work-based, artefact-based research.

I can see the impact in the texts that I am writing for Ca2re but also in the self-consciousness I gain in the struggle to establish ddr in my university

/…/ Attending the conferences and observing the panorama allows me to have an open mind in the face of possible proposals for doctoral candidates.

I attended a few presentations but I think that I am more and more aware that the impact of DDDr is more easily perceived when the research is more advanced. In the early stages of the investigation, everything seems more vague and diffuse, but the impact is well perceived in mature investigations. On the other hand, this is something that happens in all research processes, I think.

/…/ after the CA2RE event, I felt a renovating will of experiment more in terms of performance, representation, and communication of the project. For this reason, I will continue to deepen my topic, but at the same time, I will reflect and design more also the part related to its communication and presentation.

Some selected presentations was very inspiring for me:

  • Viktorija Bogdanova, because of all her beautiful drawings and the fact that she really just goes for what she believes is interesting. And her drawings from the exhibition helped me to remember to use my creative skills in my work as well, in my case that will involve craftsmanship with the materials.
  • ‘How to use a monument’ by Or Haklai, Enrico Chinellato; because of their interesting process
  • ‘Wild gardens’ by Silvia Maria Mundula, because of her topic which really interests me as well, and helped me to realize I should just focus on what’s Triggers me in my work.
  • ‘The Potential of a Tectonic Approach for the Experiential Qualities of Architecture’ by Tim Simon-Meyer, he have an similar approach as I plan to, including materials, students, building workshops and tectonics. An inspiring presentation for me, indeed!

Discussions after the presentations, both with the presenters and with the audience was often interesting and helped me to get to know new people and with them discuss my work.

The encounter of different practices and understandings of research and increasingly also the encounter of different creative disciplines at the CA2RE conferences always provide new energy and rekindles the understanding of the breadth of positions and an improved awareness of the particularity of my local context.

Maja Zander’s way of presenting, inviting people and enjoying the discussion through complete improvisation. Berlise Tarcan’s poetic inscriptions made of fabric and placed within a dialogue with Norway’s natural environment. Also, her exhibitions gave me the feeling of literally touching the colors through a soft envelope.

The fact the feedback and the questions people posed to me were much more refined and sophisticated when compared to those I was given on the previous conference.

I not only pushed myself to present my project within the theme of reformulation, but gained a new understanding of what my work is producing and how much it has reformulated since I began and produced my first presentations.

Reformulation was an extremely relevant topic in evaluating DDDr. The dynamics of discussion activated by the request of reformulating Particpants’ research proved remarkably relevant in clarifying DDDr most challenging features.

My experience of Ca2Re events is that they provide an amplified and unobstructed engagement with the research and researcher, as part of an engaged community of research practitioners.

Right after the presentation, during the discussion with the panelists, it became clear that I have to take a new direction in terms of “design”. The last day, during the general feedback, it was certainly very helpful to hear the observer’s comments about my presentation, as well as peers who contributed with additional remarks.
